Packing for a move to Spain: what to bring and what to leave
A move to Spain is a long overland journey, and packing for it is not the same as packing for a move across town. It is also a rare chance to be ruthless about what you actually want in your new life. Here is how to think about both.
Pack for the journey, not just the trip
Your belongings will spend a long time on the road, handled at both ends and possibly through a consolidation depot. That means proper export-grade materials matter — double-walled cartons, purpose-made covers for mattresses and sofas, and secure wrapping for anything with a screen or a delicate finish.
This is the main argument for professional packing on a Spain move. It is not about doing it for you so much as doing it to a standard built for the distance. If you pack yourself, invest in the right materials and do not skimp on the fragile items.
What is worth shipping
Ship the things that are genuinely hard or expensive to replace and that you love: quality furniture, books, artwork, kitchen equipment you actually use, and anything with sentimental weight. These are what make a Spanish house feel like your home rather than a holiday let.
Think carefully about electricals. Spain uses the same voltage as the UK but different plugs, and some large appliances are cheaper or better suited if bought locally. A beloved range cooker might make the trip; a tired washing machine probably should not.
What to leave, sell or give away
Bulky, low-value furniture rarely justifies the space it takes on a long move. Nor do things you have kept out of habit rather than affection. Moving is the moment to let them go — sell them, gift them, or donate them, and arrive lighter.
The same goes for anything climate-mismatched. Heavy winter gear that made sense in the north of England will mostly gather dust on the Costa Blanca. Pack for the life you are moving towards, not the one you are leaving.
Protecting the precious things
Art, antiques, pianos and mirrors need more than a blanket and hope on a journey this long. Tell your mover about them early so they can be crated or specially wrapped and loaded with the right protection.
Keep documents, medicines, valuables and the irreplaceable with you rather than in the load — passports, residency paperwork and anything you cannot afford to be without on arrival travel with you, not the van.
